Uncovering a Rare Skin Disease: Julie Shares Why She Is Grateful

Julie Devlin has been a patient of Dr. Kurt Grelck since July of 2012 and is so thankful to Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin for their wonderful skin care and for bringing Dr. Grelck to Stevens Point.

Julie Devlin - Patient of Dr. Kurt Grelck at the Stevens Point Clinic

Julie Devlin

“Dr. Grelck is the best at what he does, which is hard to find these days and I trust him 100 percent with my care,” said Julie Devlin of Stevens Point.

Julie has an auto immune disease called dermatomyositis and prior to coming to Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and meeting Dr. Grelck she says she had not been getting the care she needed.

Back in January 2012 she had gone to another dermatologist and had a skin biopsy done as her hands were itchy red and inflamed.  The test came back positive that something was wrong but because it was not Lupus, she was diagnosed with dermatitis and given a cream and sent on her way.  In February after many tests, she was diagnosed and given an anti-malarial drug and sent on her way again with no explanation of what her disease was.

As her condition got worse and worse she knew she had to step up to the plate and be her own advocate.

Julie shares her experience, “I feel so fortunate to have found Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin and Dr. Grelck.  He is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable in my disease.  He took the time to explain to me that I need to avoid UV/UVB rays and that I need to apply sunblock and sat and listened to all of my concerns and did not push me off on other doctors as I have found in the past.  Finally a doctor that truly cares, I said to my husband when we left.  However, I was upset that all of my other doctors had not shared any information with me regarding my disease.  From this point Dr. Grelck has taken my care into his own hands by ordering tests that should have been done, calling me after hours on his own free time to explain new medications to me, writing a letter to a disability committee so that I may obtain a loan to put protective film on my windows to help me with my disease and he is truly there to listen and care.  He goes above and beyond my expectations with every monthly visit.”

Julie feels the staff has also been extremely helpful and says whenever she calls everyone is very polite and calls are returned promptly.

“Without Dr. Grelck and Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin I don’t know where I would be in my disease.”

Dermatomyositis is a rare muscle disease characterized by inflammation and a skin rash.  Although the cause of dermatomyositis is unknown, experts think it may be due to a viral infection of the muscles or a problem with the body’s immune system. It can also sometimes occur in patients who have cancer of the abdomen, lung or other body areas.  Anyone can develop dermatomyositis, but it most commonly occurs in children ages 5 – 15 and adults ages 40 – 60 and is found in women more so than men. Symptoms that can occur are difficulty swallowing; muscle weakness, stiffness, or soreness; purple or violet colored upper eyelids; purple-red skin rash and shortness of breath.

The Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin clinic in Stevens Point opened August 1st, 2012 and currently Dr. Grelck practices out of the Stevens Point, Waupaca and Wisconsin Rapids clinics.  He is a board certified dermatologist who is knowledgeable in the latest treatment protocols for skin diseases and conditions.

“I strive to give patients an accurate diagnosis, a modern, evidence-based treatment plan, and to treat each patient the same as I would a family member or close friend,” said Kurt Grelck, DO.  “Being a board certified internist prior to doing a fellowship in dermatology makes me a better-rounded physician.”

Cold Weather Just Not Letting Up: Beat the Itch of Eczema and Psoriasis

Rash girl

Our skin tends to be drier in the cold winter months and this can worsen underlying skin disorders such as eczema (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis.

If you are living with either one of these disorders it is important to stay on top of your treatment plan as it is with any skin disorder.  If you haven’t saught out medical attention and think you may be suffering from eczema or psoriasis, make sure to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist right away to diagnose the problem and set up a treatment plan with your doctor.

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin personalizes every treatment plan to best suit your needs as all cases of skin disorders are not the same and can be treated very differently.

Eczema and psoriasis are both immune-mediated diseases that tend to run in families.  They are characterized by red skin, scaling and itching and usually relapse over time.  However, psoriasis and eczema result from two different immune processes.

90% of eczema cases develop before age five, whereas psoriasis often appears in between the ages of 15 and 35 and can develop at any age.  Eczema occurs in 10 to 20% of children, but remains a problem for only 1-3% of adults, and psoriasis affects 2-3% of the population overall.

Eczema is characterized by severely dry, scaly and itchy skin that results in significant water loss. The skin becomes red, flaky, and blistered.  In contrast, psoriasis develops when skin cells produce too quickly causing an abnormally large amount of cells to pile up on the surface of the skin. This skin becomes thickened and flaky with silver-colored lesions that are typically seen in plaque psoriasis, the most common type of psoriasis.

Common tips while dealing with eczema and psoriasis are to take good care of your skin, treat the itch and avoid scratching, learn your triggers and keep track of flare-ups and try to control your stress.

Living with Skin Cancer

DAW-30-FULL Screen-Brian-Mohs 1

Colonel Brian Cundiff: Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin Skin Cancer Patient

Detect it. Check it.

Colonel Brian H. Cundiff was first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2005.  When he first found out, he thought he’d tackle it like other things he had faced in his life.  He confronted it head on.

“When you catch it early, it is not to worry,” said Colonel Cundiff. “Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin will take great care of you and with Mohs surgery they make sure to remove all affected areas in just one visit.”

Colonel Cundiff is a native of Crandon, Wisconsin who graduated from St. Norbert College in 1961.  He was commissioned through the ROTC program as a distinguished military graduate and his career spanned 30 years in the military serving as a rifle platoon leader, company commander, advisor, executive advisor, assistant professor of military science, operations officer and Deputy Chief of Staff for operations before retiring in spring of 1991.  Winning a number of awards, ranging from the distinguished service cross, purple heart, Vietnam service medal and many more; Colonel Cundiff is a highly accomplished individual who can be looked up to.

In the past eight years, Colonel Cundiff has been diagnosed six times with skin cancer and will be having his latest procedure taken care of in late March, 2013, but he says, for him it is just the norm to now have constant skin check-ups as he gets older and taking into consideration his surroundings throughout the years.

Certain types of people are more susceptible to getting skin cancer.  For example; having light hair and light skin or in Colonel Cundiff’s instance the environment he was brought up in such as being outdoors or in a highly volatile surrounding ,etc.  It is very important to be aware of these types of warning signs and make sure to see a dermatologist annually to be monitored, even at a young age.  Treatment is more successful and less painful when detected early.

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin offers Mohs surgery because they feel their patients deserve the most thorough and effective skin cancer removal possible and the comfort of knowing when they leave the clinic the day of their surgery, the cancer is gone.  Mohs surgery has a cure rate above 99 percent.  Mohs fellowship provides the best training available in skin cancer surgery, cutaneous oncology and subsequent cosmetic reconstruction.

“I have been very satisfied with my experience having Mohs surgery and the doctors that took care of me; my skin cancer was always gone after one visit and every time it was a fast procedure where I felt no pain and was very happy with the results,” said Colonel Cundiff. “I have stayed with Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin because they not only treat me like family but they look after me and monitor me; it’s just like going down town.”  He comes in every three-six months for routine check-ups.

It is important to Colonel Cundiff to help others by spreading the word about skin cancer and the importance of early detection.

Colonel Cundiff said, “If you have an area of concern on your skin, please don’t wait to get it checked and remember to follow-up with any recommended treatment.”

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin treats all types of skin cancer and the invasiveness may vary from patient to patient.

Stay In Touch With Your Skin at All Ages

Don’t Wait.

Detect it. Check it. FREE skin screening.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and while it is treated more in people who are over the age of 50; melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years of age.

It is proven that the way one takes care of their skin in their younger years will affect their skin health later in life. A study published by the Mayo Clinic in April of 2012 shows an alarming increase in skin cancer among young adults.

“Skin cancer is on the rise – and a lot of this may be from our culture that emphasizes a “healthy tan” or “natural glow”.  These are misnomers because a tan is really the body’s way of trying to protect itself from ultraviolet radiation,” said Lisa Campbell, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist and one of the five fellowship trained Mohs Micrographic Skin Cancer Surgeons at Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin.  Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin also employees two ASMS trained Mohs surgeons.

“A tan only occurs AFTER the skin is damaged.  Skin cancers are slow-growing and may not be noticeable for 10 years, but they do happen, and are happening at younger ages.”

A single tanning bed session increases a person’s chance of melanoma by 20 percent.  Those that start tanning younger than 35 years old can have an 87 percent greater risk of melanoma in their lifetime.  The risk for squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma roughly doubles.  Sun and UV light exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers.

At the young age of 25, Stephanie from Manitowoc has had eight abnormal moles removed over the course of five years, two of which needed more extensive treatment.  She proudly recommends Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin to her friends and family. “It is hard to think about where I would be today without their help,” says Stephanie, a long-time outdoorswoman.

“I am so thankful for the experience I’ve had at Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin. They helped me to realize the importance of regular skin checks. While I love the outdoors and getting a tan, I would much rather protect myself and remain cancer free!”

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin emphasizes the importance of all individuals at any age to do a self-skin check at least once a month, visit a local dermatologist annually for a professional skin exam and if they’re aware of any changes in their skin, such as a new or changing mole or a bleeding area, don’t wait to get them checked.

Dr. Campbell shares that, “Most skin lesions are not harmful, but when there is a problem, it is important to remove them early.  By doing so, we can save lives.”

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin is holding FREE skin cancer screenings at select Northeast and Southwest Wisconsin locations on Saturday, February 23rd from 9am-1pm and urges anyone who has a suspicious spot of concern to attend. (Click here for more information including location information)

If you are unable to attend one of the skin cancer screenings on February 23rd, you can click here to request an appointment with a dermatologist in your neighborhood.

Please check back this Thursday, February 21st for warning signs pertaining to skin cancer and what to check for.
